simple sign tutorial

this was made using photoshop cs2
but most photoshops are the basically same
you'll need a basic understanding of photoshop to do this

step 1 - one of the most important steps is choosing the right picture for a simple sign
i like to use clear, sharp pictures for my simple signs, i'm going to be using this one:

step 2 - open up your picture, if yours doesn't look clear or sharpened enough, sharpen it

set it to these settings, or play around to your liking

step 3 - now i usually desaturate the picture by pressing SHIFT+CTRL+U
but if you dont want to you don't have to, just go with whatever you feel looks best

step 4 - when i desaturated my picture it didn't turn out as bright as i'd like so i'm going to edit the contrast a bit
i use curves to adjust my contrast, but you can use levels or brightness/contrast whatever you think works best
curves takes a bit to figure out but it's a wonderful tool i love it for all sorts of things

step 5 - now here comes the tricky part, so your picture is all ready to add awesome effects to
but with simple signs there are just so many ways you can go it's hard to figure out what to do!
first i'm going to add some color orbs, i'm going to be using these colors:

step 6 - make a new layer: press SHIFT+CTRL+N, press ok, then use a soft round brush at a size of 300 or 400 or so depending on your pictures size
place three orbs, each a different color, play around with the placement until you think it looks best
now set the color orb layer to "screen" to get the glowy effect

step 7 - i'm going to go with a popular sign style; the paisley or flower background effect, you'll need a picture with a mostly white background to do this
you will also need some paisley or flower brushes, if you don't have any you can get the ones I'm going to use by clicking here

step 8 - make a new layer: press SHIFT+CTRL+N, press ok, then take the brush use black for th ecolor and place it over your picture like so:
don't worry we're not going to keep it this way, but make sure the the brush covers all the white parts evenly

step 9 - now just zoom in and erase away the parts that cover the person in the picture, be careful, go slow, and do a good job.

step 10 - add a drop shadow to the paisley brush layer and drag it under the color orb layer like so:

with these settings for the drop shadow

step 11 - add some reflecting black text, merge your layers, add a border and you're done!
